Now that the initial shock of Ronda Rousey being knocked out by Holly Holm is finally starting to die down, I wanted to share my thoughts on what occurred.
UFC 193 was a night of memorable fights. Holly Holm shocked the world and I’ll admit, I did not see it coming…
Holly Holm is a former undisputed welterweight boxing champion. Despite that fact, her fights leading up to the Rousey fight were not spectacular. She hasn’t dominated her opponents like Ronda has.
Was Holly holding back? I don’t think it’s that easy. As the saying goes: Styles Make Fights… And so do Game Plans.
Southpaw fighters are notoriously difficult to fight for an orthodox fighter. Holm, being a southpaw, was able to pick Ronda apart from the opening bell.
Both Freddie Roach and Ronda’s mother, AnnMaria De Mars have gone on the record to publicly criticize Rousey’s coach, Edmond Tarverdyan.
It does make you wonder if there was some drama in Rousey’s camp…
However true that may or may not be, many over look the game plan Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn came up with for Holly.
The fight reminded me of Nick Diaz vs Carlos Condit.
Holly did a great job setting the pace and controlling the distance from start to finish while delivering hard punches. Similar to how Condit was able to do to Diaz.
Ronda had never been challenged like that in a fight. We’ve never seen her hit that hard. It will be interesting to see if the rematch happens right away or if Rousey will take some time off, work on her striking and maybe add some wrestling to her arsenal to help with those takedowns when your hips are being controlled.
If the rematch happens within the next year, I think we may see Holly get her hand raised again.
Whatever happens, unlike the masses, don’t be so quick to dismiss Rousey’s skills and hate her as a person.
While Ronda hasn’t displayed good sportsmanship at times, all the trolling and hate talk flooding the internet about her has to stop! Fighting is an emotional sport. Fans can be so cruel at times. Fuck Internet Warriors. Fuck Those Who Put People Down While Having Achieved Nothing Themselves.
Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey put their lives on the line for everyone’s entertainment. It was a great fight!
