Amit Thapa is another great fighter that I had the honor of coaching. A native of Mumbai, India, Amit moved to Dubai to pursue a career in MMA and as a personal trainer in the fitness industry. Amit and I met when he joined us during our pro MMA training at Team Nogueira Dubai. He’s a strong Muay Thai kickboxer and was relatively new to the ground.
At the time, Amit was working at another gym so our time together was limited to when he could make it in. One day, he pulled me aside after training and asked me to corner him in an upcoming fight he had scheduled. From that point on, we set aside extra time to begin training together and come up for a strategy for his fight versus Hassan Khan, a tough Pakistani fighter.
The fight took place in India’s number 1 MMA promotion: Super Fight League. The card was billed: SFL 38: India vs Pakistan. India and Pakistan have a fierce rivalry. Relations between India and Pakistan have been complex due to a number of historical and political events. So, it’s safe to say, bragging rights were on the line on both sides.
Amit won the fight in devastating fashion by ground and pound; an uncharacteristic game plan that I’m sure was the last thing his opponent expected given Amit’s muay thai skills.
I’m happy to say that Amit went on to earn a developmental contract at Jackson Wink MMA Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico to pursue his dream of fighting in the UFC one day!
